Watercolors

As a self taught artist, I have been on a journey of discovery.

What is the best brush, the best paint, paper, and lighting?  My greatest challenge, besides deciding whether my work is any good, is what to paint and finally how to get the look I have in my mind onto the paper.

I start with the general feel of the work, first laying down a series of washes to represent the sky, foreground and mid ground. Sketches are done for any permanent structures such as buildings and paths.

After the general shapes are brought in the details are added with brush work and impasto.  Several techniques are used to add the feeling of texture. I am not opposed to using un-artist materials to get a certain look. In the past I have used, empty onion bags, sponges, plastic wrap and rags to achieve just the right feel.

My final touch will usually be with watercolor pencils and ink pens to add definition. Gouache may be pressed into service for a final white on white look.

I take inspiration from nature and the natural world. My love of flowers and gardens has guided my choice many times, but a husband with an interest in the Civil War took me to Antietam and my love of architecture has drawn me to the pathways of New England , birch bark, and a circular staircase.
